Does anyone have a good recipe for a red velvet cake?

My cake never turns out how I want it to, and my Grandma's birthday is naxt week. Red velvet cake is her facorite, and I would hate to disappoint her.Does anyone have a good recipe for a red velvet cake?
RED VELVET CAKE





2 oz. red food coloring


1/2 c. shortening


2 eggs


2 1/4 c. flour


1 tsp. baking soda


1 tsp. vanilla


3 tbsp. Nestle Quik powder


1 1/2 c. sugar


1 c. buttermilk (or 1 tsp. vinegar %26amp; 1 c. regular milk)


1/4 tsp. salt


1 tbsp. vinegar





Combine food coloring and Nestle Quik powder; let stand. Mix shortening, sugar, eggs and food coloring paste. Beat buttermilk; add to sugar mixture. Add flour, salt and vanilla; beat well. Mix in by hand the soda and vinegar. Pour into 2 (8';) greased and floured pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes in a 375 degree oven. Cool. Frost with Red Velvet Cake Icing.





RED VELVET CAKE ICING:





1 stick butter


1/2 c. shortening


1 c. sugar


3 tbsp. flour


1/2 c. milk


1 tsp. vanilla





Mix butter, shortening and sugar. Add flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Then add milk that has come to room temperature and vanilla. Beat until smooth.





PLEASE NOTE: that if u don't feel comfortable making it from scratch, they do have it in the box and it is good. U can make the icing and say it's semi homemade!U can't disappoint her because u were thoughtful enough to make it from the heart.Does anyone have a good recipe for a red velvet cake?

INGREDIENTS:





1/2 cup shortening


1 1/2 cups sugar


2 eggs


2 tablespoons cocoa


1 1/2 oz red food coloring


1 teaspoon salt


2 1/2 cups flour


1 teaspoon vanilla


1 cup buttermilk


1 teaspoon soda


1 tablespoons vinegar


PREPARATION:





Cream shortening; beat in sugar gradually. Add eggs, one at a time; beat well after each addition. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to creamed mixture. Add salt, flour and vanilla alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Sprinkle soda over vinegar; pour vinegar over batter. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Bake in 3 8-inch pans or 2 9-inch pans for 30 minutes at 350掳.
they now have a cake mix in the grocery for red velvet cake for us lazy bakers. Sorry I can't remember if it is Duncan Hines or some other brand

Cream: 1/2 cup Crisco and 1 and 1/2 cup sugar





Add: 2 eggs.





Sift 3 times and then add to above mixture:


2 cups flour


1 Tablespoon cocoa


1/2 tsp. salt


Add: 1 tsp. vanilla


1 cup Buttermilk





Then add: 2 oz. red food coloring (2 bottles)





Fold in: 1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1 Tablespoon of vinegar.


Bake in two layers at 350degrees for 30-35 minutes


Cool completely





Icing for cake:





1/4 cup flour


dash salt


1 cup milk


Cook over low heat to a pudding stage.


Cool completely. Then





Cream: 1/2 cup crisco 1 cup sugar





1 stick oleo (butter)


1 tsp. vanilla


Add to cool pudding mixture. Beat until smooth.


Refrigerate icing until spreadable.





Ice cooled cake with chilled icing. (Opt.) sprinkle with 1 can Angel Flake coconut.
