I need a good frosting recipe for decorating a cake. Nothing too sweet or that hardens.?

I am making my son's birthday cake next weekend and need a good frosting recipe thats fairly simple and quick. I usually buy frosting from the grocery store bakery but it has gotten pricey. I am looking for a frosting that is good for decorating/piping and keeps its shape, but not too sweet or one that hardens. Thanks in advance :)I need a good frosting recipe for decorating a cake. Nothing too sweet or that hardens.?
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

6 to 8 cups confectioners鈥?sugar

1/2 cup milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Add 4 cups of the sugar and then the milk and vanilla. On the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, about 3-5 minutes. Gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition (about 2 minutes), until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency. You may not need to add all of the sugar. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and mix thoroughly. (Use and store the icing at room temperature because icing will set if chilled.) Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

French Butter Cream frosting

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar

3 tablespoons corn syrup

1/2 cup water

3 eggs

1 pinch salt

1 pound butter

Put sugar, corn syrup and water in a saucepan over high heat.

Meanwhile, beat eggs and salt until fluffy.

When all of the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is boiling, pour over beating eggs. Cut butter into cubes. When the eggs-sugar bowl is lukewarm to the touch, slowly add butter while continuing to beat until fluffy and smooth. Flavor as desired.

the quickest way is to mix powdered sugar with milk. figure out how much icing you need, and pour about a quarter of that amount in powdered sugar into a bowl. pour in about two times as much milk as there is powdered sugar and mix it. the great thing about this is that you can vary the amounts of powdered sugar and milk depending on how thick or thin you want the icing to be. tell your son happy birthday! :)
This one is very easy!

1 4oz. package of any flavor pudding

1 cup milk

1/4 cup confectioners sugar

Cool Whip

Mix first three ingredients until thickened.Fold in 3 1/2 cups of Cool Whip.

Cake must be refrigerated because of the dairy.
