Cake recipe?

Hello! I have recently started watching ';Ace of Cakes'; on the Food Network Channel and would like to try my hand at cake decorating. I'm not too worried about the decorating as I am at finding the right kind of cake. I'll be using a fondant to cover the cake. Again, it's not really for any specific purpose, so I suppose it would be preferable to have a circular cake, maybe two layers, non-tiered.

Thanks!

Oh, I don't really want to try something fancy as far as cakes, just a white non-dry cake. Thanks.Cake recipe?
That is a cool show, huh? Just use a boxed cake mix and buttercream icing. If you really want to bake your own cake from scratch, see recipe below (omit coconut: JMHO). Once cold, you should be able to ';carve'; it w/ a serrated knife into any shape you like.

Buttermilk White Cake with Coconut

4 egg whites

2 cups all-purpose flour

1-1/2 cups sugar

2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. baking soda

1 cup buttermilk or sour milk**

1/2 cup shortening

2 tsp. vanilla

1 recipe Buttercream Frosting

2 cups coconut chips or flaked coconut

1. Let egg whites stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans; set aside.

2. In large mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Add buttermilk, shortening, and vanilla; beat on low until combined. Beat on medium 2 minutes more, scraping bowl. Add egg whites; beat 2 minutes more. (Batter will appear curdled.)

3. Spread in pans. Bake 25-30 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched and wooden pick inserted near centers comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely.

4. Prepare Buttercream Frosting. Place layer flat side down on plate; spread top with some of the frosting. Stack second layer flat side down; frost top and sides. Sprinkle coconut. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate. Makes 16 servings.

5. Buttercream Frosting: In 4-quart mixing bowl beat 3/4 cup softened butter on medium until smooth. Gradually beat in 3 cups powdered sugar to combine. Beat in 1/4 cup buttermilk or milk and 2 tsp. vanilla. Gradually beat in enough additional powdered sugar (3-1/4-3-3/4 cups) to make of spreading consistency.

6. **Sour Milk: Pour 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar in 1-cup glass measure; add milk to equal 1 cup. Let stand 5 minutes.

White Cake

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter, softened

1-3/4 cups sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

4 egg whites

1-1/3 cups buttermilk or sour milk

Directions

Grease and lightly flour two 8x1-1/2-inch or 9x1-1/2-inch round baking pans or grease one 13x9x2-inch baking pan; set the pan(s) aside. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar and vanilla; beat until well combined. Add egg whites, one at a time, beating well after each. Add dry mixture and buttermilk alternately to beaten mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. try this or search for different cakes on this sight..the shape does not matter...u just need to make the batter then pick the proper size but u can have any shape u want....or if u want to go the easy way....box mixes and stuff at ur gracery store...if u make them homemade they taste really good if u do it right.
A firmer cake, like pound cake, will work best ......If you are going to carve it into a shape, you can freeze the cake first, and carve with a serrated knife
yes paint the fondant and try making fondant flowers o to paint them put water and food coloring and paint wait until dris then 'paste' on w/ water
